We further enhance our developing self-awareness through observing our own thoughts. Through this process we become aware of teh distance between our perceived reality and the reality of the moment. It is an exercise in which we must invest... a little time, from time to time.
After all, the last thing we would want to do is become obsessed with observing that with which we have been obsessed all our adult life, our own thoughts. And, naturally, were we to practice the observation of our own thoughts on a regular basis, we would slip beyond observation, slip down the drain where our normal way of thinking usually takes us.
And, yet, being aware of where we are demands that we are aware of where we think we are. This is how we, through practice, allow the thoughts drift away. It is an important adjunct to meditation.
Meditation enables us experience moments without thought, moments of clarity, moments of presence. The purpose of meditation is, among other things, to enable us carry that experience into the cut and thrust of the moment in our daily life. Observing our thoughts presents us with a foil, a means of self-understanding, a means of self-balancing and, ultimately, a means of realising how far we've travelled on our journey into flow which is, of course, a means of encouraging ourselves to go ever further.
The most interesting thing about this process of observation is that, as a result of the interplay between what meditation gives us and the self-awareness of our thoughts, we discover, over time, that there are no more thoughts to observe. We are simply in flow.
Attention! Yes, this week's Quick Tip is a call to attention, attention to the detail of where you are and what you're doing now.
Deliberately go out of your way (to find your way!) to pay all of your attention to, for example, the hand, arm and body movements involved in pouring a cup of tea.
Note: there's no exclamation mark at the end of the last sentence - I mean it. It is in the little moments of life that we find our life and start really and properly living it.
