This Week's Reflection

 

I regularly receive emails from people who have "fallen off the wagon" or, in other words, fallen out of their regular practice of meditation (notice I neither used the words "habit" nor "routine"!).

 

They're frequently annoyed with themselves, often frustrated and sometimes feeling guilty. They complain about lack of self-discipline or laziness or both!

 

But have a good look at this week's video and consider what we're up against. How, being surrounded by madness, we can feel more "comfortable" being that little bit crazy ourselves. How, having got this "far" in our lives, we can deny the imperative of taking control (of our state, our emotions, our life).

 

All this could be taken as some kind of confirmation that the road to the life that you would love to live is straight and narrow - too straight and too narrow - too great a challenge, requiring the kind of discipline unbecoming of the normal undisciplined mind.

 

It is not so. Yes, we need some discipline - a little, not a lot. Yes, we need structure and, as I've found over nearly 28 years of doing this, we need support.

 

And we need to be reminded. Of what? Well, some simple things for a start. If you've fallen off the wagon it doesn't matter - what matters is that you get back on it. If you're annoyed with yourself for falling off the wagon, more fool you - doesn't that annoyance just encourage the ramblings of the normal crazy mind? If you're feeling frustrated or guilty, multiply that madness a couple of times or, if you really think you've lost it, multiply it exponentially!

Because, whatever you might have done or failed to do in the past, whatever has passed that might have led you down a dead-end, it has passed. It's in the past. Today, with our first video in this series, you've stepped out into a new understanding of what made you tick, what got you to where you now are.

 

And, what you also now know is that what got you to where you are will not get you to where you want to go.So, chill, all is well, we're moving in the right direction.
