THE MIND BOGGLES!! |
Change Your Life | Dec.15th 2022 No. 787 |
It's awfully easy to slip up during the course of the rough and tumble of everyday life. After all, we're only human! So, we need to constantly nudge ourselves, remind ourselves...
Many years ago, I had a conversation with a client who asked me what he needed to do when he found himself stumble back into the world of useless thought. He said "I probably stumble twenty times a day" (I reckon that he grossly underestimated his stumbling!) In reply, I told him that he needed to pick himself up twenty one times!
We're stumbling all the time and, a lot of the time, we probably believe our stumbling to be harmless - you know, some silly little thought about something that has nothing to do with anything. That's whu I italicised useless.
Silly little thoughts about nothing are useless - but useless is extremely dangerous. Useless, apparently harmless thoughts lead us down a dark alley where their more toxic companions are waiting. Useless is slippery slope that starts with our (incorrect) belief that the thought in question is neither here nor there. Any useless thought is a thought that needs to be stopped dead in its tracks.
How on earth are we going to achieve that?
We need to keep reminding ourselves to be in the present moment. We need to consistently (the constantly comes later) be aware of where we are, what we're doing (or supposed to be doing!), how we're doing it (we're just doing it and how we're feeling.
With a consistent approach comes constancy and, with constancy, comes a completely different experience of being which starts with a noticing that I'm doing what I'm doing more effectively... and I'm getting just a little buzz out of it.
And, in the way that we shouldn't underestimate a useless thought, don't underestimate the importance of an apparently little buzz - little buzzes are the evidence that we need to confirm to ourselves that, not only are we moving in the right direction but, as a result, we can trust ourselves to a greater extent to simply just do the right thing with increasing consistency.
Read today's Reflection - it's full of Quick Tips. Seriously.
And today, right now, take a minute to allow yourself to be fully aware of where you are, how you're feeling, what you're doing and how you're doing it.
And, of course, being aware of all this means that you'll simply be observing it and experiencing it - you will not be judging it!
