Imagine spending years of your precious life climbing "the ladder of your career" only to get to the top and discover that you had put your ladder up against the wrong wall! So goes a client's story, recounted in this week's episode of my podcast.
And it provides us with another perspective on why we need to trust our gut.
Our gut instinct knows what is best for us which is a far cry from what we want.
Want is based in thought - in figuring out what would make us happy and successful - more often than not based on the norms of what passes, or appears to pass, for happiness and success.
Someone, recently commenting on one of my YouTube videos, alluded to Tony Robbins' advice that you need to work to get clarity in relation to what you want. That clarity will lead you to your promised land.
You also probably need to pay him lots of money to get that clarity! I recollect someone telling me that he needed his "annual fix" of Tony Robbins - a three day, four-figure event!
Be that as it may, there are a couple of things that we need to understand: there is never, ever and work involved in understanding what is best for you. You already know. Your gut knows. Working to get clarity - in other words, thinking and over-thinking - divorces you from knowing that you already know.
The clarity we need is clarity of mind. The way to the best things in life, your best life, is through living it in the moment. Being present in the moment gives us the clarity of knowing. Being present in the moment gives us presence. Presence is attractive - it will, guided by your gut, attract all that is best into your life.
And that's not a nice idea, it's far better than that - science has proved that that is how presence works in everyday life.
Forget everything that you thought you know about what you want out of life. Detach.
Just let go today - let go of your thoughts when they arise, let go of anxiety when you feel it creep around the corner, let go of not being happy with what you already have right now.
Let go by breathing, deeply, mindfully, intentionally - a couple of moments of this will suffice.
And, when we let go of what we think we want, we discover that we know what is best for us and those we love.
