This Week's Reflection

All too often, we spend our life blowing our life.

If our minds aren't running away with us, we're running away from the here and now... photographing the here and now! Or thinking about the next here and now or making it through this here and now, waiting for something to happen.

All too often, we waste our time looking at the lives of others - on Facebook or Instagram it has quite rightly been described as "doom-scrolling" - comparing our lot to that of others or, indeed, bitching about others.

When we engage in these activities, truth be told, we're engaged in nothing - we're going through the motions, filling time, wasting time. We're, quite literally, wasting the precious moments that, together, make up our life - precious moments that will never be repeated, precious moments that are deducted from our unknown store of remaining precious moments.

And all this is about choice. Yes, we choose to doom-scroll, it's not that we can't help it. We choose to spend our precious moments annoying ourselves with the lives of others when we could be investing in our own lives. We choose to let our lives slip through our fingers.

The fact that, on autopilot, these choices are automatic is no reason for allowing it happen. Rather, it is a horribly lame excuse for not living.

You can't just suddenly choose to change the normal habits of a normal adult lifetime. You need to get into the abnormal habit of deliberately choosing, in a controlled environment, for a few minutes each day until that abnormal habit grows on you.

Meditation provides you with both the ability to choose and the controlled environment in which to exercise that choice. It doesn't just facilitate the growth of an abnormal habit, it facilitates the growth of brain cells, neural pathways and synaptic connections that people who do not make this choice do not possess. It enables you grow into an experience of your life.

In all sorts of ways, meditation provides us with a tried, trusted and scientifically validated path to a sustainable personal growth that will change your life. It is a lifestyle choice.

This Week's Quick Tip

If you didn't meditate this morning, stop now and immerse yourself in seeing, feeling, hearing, smelling and tasting where you are and what you're doing right now. Do it for a couple of minutes - it will be best couple of minutes that you spend in your day today.

And, if you have already meditated this morning, do what I've just suggested anyway!

We need to keep building the abnormal habit of actually experiencing the reality of our own lives in the here and now.
