We could use a variety of expressions to encapsulate the normal human condition: dead from the neck up; brain-dead; lost in translation; missing in action (or reaction actually!); dead to the world; not of this world... I could go on. And, you know, some might take exception to my being so to-the-point but there's no point in our beating around the push.
Using your mind normally, you're missing your life.
Now, many people have wrung their hands in anguish about their missed life up to the time they started "coming to their senses" but to regret is to wallow more deeply in the thought from which we wish to extricate ourselves. We can deal with the subject of regrets (briefly) some other time.
For now, let's turn our attention to now. Obviously, I mean that literally. When we turn our attention to the here and now, when we really go out of our way to give it all of our attention, we change the rules, we change the game, we change our lives because, for starters (and this starting point is really important) we change the selection process, that would otherwise be automatic, of what we choose to process - we are no longer hostages to our programming.
We need to do this with determination, conviction and consistency because, little-by-litte, now-by-now, we will transform the very essence of our experience of being.
Take a short break. Pause for a drink - tea, coffee, water.
Observe: look at the liquid, the bubbles, the ripples; hold the drink in both hands and feel the cup or glass; put your nose right down against the liquid's surface and take a deep breath, smell; take a sip and let the liquid linger on your tongue, on the different areas of your tongue, our taste buds are arranged by area!; swallow, feel the liquid move down your throat, into your body.
Take your time. These may be the most important few minutes that you spend today because you will spend them coming to your senses.
