Today's Quick Tip

Give yourself credit where credit is due. The fact that you're even reading this means you should award yourself a Gold Star... most people will just trudge into 2021 the same as every other year.

And, when you stumble and fall this year, give yourself the credit you deserve for having stumbled whilst trying. Just get up and try again - perseverance is the key to success.

The most important tip of all: give yourself the pat on the back you deserve every time you realise you're having one of life's little perfect moments. Indeed, this may be one of them.

I used it last week, I'm using it freely this week. The key word for now (and for all the nows in the year ahead) is experience.

But the word has more than one meaning... we can experience something - like anger or joy - in the moment or we can be experienced - having had a lifetime of previous experience.

Let's explore this both ways: first of all, your lifetime of experience is no guide to your life ahead. Because all your previous experience as an adult has been experienced through thought... not really experienced at all. As a result, the normal mind's experiences tend to the repetitive (obviously!) and give rise to the mistaken assumption that it will be ever thus.

On the other hand, when we redevelop our innate ability to experience the here and now, we liberate ourselves from the repetitive thoughts and the consequential repetitive experiences that have gone before... we are in pastures new.

As we embark on 2021, bring this understanding with you. There is only one way in which you can do this - make sure that you experience the reality of the moment. The more you do, the more your new experiences will enable you experience the kind of life you'd really love.

 

Tomorrow, normal people will embark on what they think their New Year's Resolutions will bring. Some really normal people will convince themselves they're still on holidays - so their New Year's Resolutions don't really need to start until this coming Monday... so much for commitment!

If 2021 were to get off to a normal start, normal people would inundate gyms next week - the fact that, in many countries, gyms aren't currently open gives them a bye! But bear with me, if things were normal, normal people would pay their first of two visits to their new gym next week. Not two per week, two... full stop.

That's what I've been told by people in the gym business.

Look on it like this: the normal brain is wired to stay within the owner's comfort zone, regardless of how uncomfortable that might actually be. Which is more comfortable on a cold January night: a cup of tea and a biscuit in front of the fire or panting and sweating on a treadmill? Make up your own normal mind!
