What Are You Afraid Of?

You are your own worst enemy - we've all felt that way at some point but psychology confirms it. And one of the key things any worthwhile enemy will do us put the fear of God (or equivelent!) into us... we're very good at that too!

Mindfulness Tip

Choose only to dwell on what's going on today, today. Let today be an exercise in living in the present. Left to its own devices, your mind will imagine scenarios that we do not want to happen and then it will torture us by encouraging us to wallow in all the related "what ifs" or "maybes"... this is what you and I call worry but it is nothing but a mind over which one hasn't taken control. Control yourself today - tomorrow will be the better for it.

Reflections on Mindfulness

Today's Video addresses fear - but so does today's Quick Tip. Increasingly, I'm talking to people who, until the pull themselves together, live in fear of the future. We might casually call it "worry" - we might even label it stress. But all it is is unchecked useless thought.

"All it is" is slightly misleading - because this fear keeps people awake at night - and recent research has firmly established that just one night's disrupted sleep results in a build-up of the protiens associated with dementia on the neural pathways' synapses - as a client said to me recently "Well, all you've done now is given me something more to worry about at four in the morning!" I should, of course, mention that a susbequent good night's sleep will clean out the synapses but regular disrupted sleep is very bad indeed for your long-term mental health. And worry and stress are conclusively bad for your digestive and immune systems but, most importantly, your cardio-vascular system. The point is, that fear will get you one way or another!

That is, of course, unless you pull yourself together and do something about it. This is good news indeed, because you can do all you need to do to simply not just stop fear in its tracks but cut the legs right from under it. All you need to do is turn your mind away from the useless thoughts that lead us down a blind-alley. You don't fight the fear - there's no point in shadow-boxing something that isn't there! You don't even give it the time of day! You simply take the time and make the choice to experience the here and now, just as it is here and now.

In the here and now, all is well unless, of course, you're being chased by a hungry tiger... which is why we were wired this way in the first place! Fix your wiring.

Mindfulness Workshops

The Psychology of Success will take place again in Dublin on Tuesday January 16th 2018. As any of you who have participated already know, participant numbers are limited to eight and the average number is more like five or six. It's an intensive experience and is meant to be... it also happens to be a really relaxing day! So, if you know anyone who wants to come along to the IMI in Sandyford on Tuesday January 16th, share this page with them. And, if you're ready to change your own life yourself, you'll find all the details here...

Normal Crazy People - Mindlessness in Action

Even if it weren't inherently wrong and undoubtedbly illegal, wouldn't you think that even knowing that it was all over the news might encourage the average half-wit to hold his tongue?

Well my daughter encountered an above-average half-wit on Monday. OK, he may not have been aware of the Irish Government Minister who was obliged to pay damages for asking an interviewee if she was married, but this guy sure as hell would have heard about President Macron's Crusade against sexism... it was only launched last Friday!

And, yet, my daughter was interviewed for a job in Lyon on Monday. The interviewer's first question was "Are you married or in a relationship?" She was stunned but he explained he needed to know because not being single could be to her detriment! He then clearly decided to throw caution to the wind... "Actually, you're the wrong sex altogether for this job! Actually I've already shortlisted two guys!"

I shall add no further comment.
